Yamaha GCB – a grand piano that fits into any home

At 151 cm in length, the Yamaha GCB is the most compact grand piano in the GC Series and Yamaha's entry point into grand piano ownership. It comes from the Kakegawa factory in Japan and brings the touch, tone and craftsmanship of a Yamaha grand to a footprint that fits into living spaces. The built-in SILENT Piano SH3 system also lets you play quietly with headphones.

Sound and construction

Body, rim, braces and soundboard form a unified structure through which vibrations travel efficiently across the whole instrument. The soundboard is solid spruce, as are the ribs. Three back beams plus the Tone Collector and thick inner-rim laminations increase rigidity and tonal projection. Yamaha casts the frame in its own foundry in Iwata using the V-Pro process.

The bass bridge is overhanging, and the scale includes agraffes and an aliquot system (front duplex scaling). The plain wire is made in Japan and the bass strings are machine-wound in Kakegawa. Yamaha seasons the frame, braces and soundboard woods so that they can adapt to temperature and humidity, which supports tuning stability.

Action, keyboard and pedals

The action is of the C1X type and is regulated and voiced at the Kakegawa factory. The hammer felt is made in Japan specifically for the GCB. The 88 keys have white tops in acrylic resin and black tops in phenolic resin. The soft-close fallboard closes gently, and the three pedals (damper, sostenuto, shift) are arranged in the classic way.

The cabinet includes a sliding music desk, a lid prop with two positions and a safety stop, and single brass casters.

SILENT Piano SH3 system

On the GCB SH3 a motor-driven hammer shank stopper holds the hammers back from the strings, so the piano can be played with headphones at any time of day or night. Non-contact key sensors and pedal sensors register every movement continuously. Yamaha's Articulation Sensor System reproduces the hammer movement at the moment it meets the strings.

The voices are the Yamaha CFX and the Bösendorfer Imperial, both binaurally sampled. The Quick Escape system optimises the distance between hammers and strings for an optimal playing feel in SILENT mode as well as in acoustic mode.
