Practising trumpet, trombone or horn in a flat, an apartment building or late at night quickly runs into a volume problem. Yamaha Silent Brass is the answer: a system that strongly reduces the sound radiated outward while still giving you a natural, full tone in your headphones.
This guide explains what Silent Brass is made of, how it differs from an ordinary practice mute, which instruments the system exists for and what to keep in mind for handling and care.
01What Yamaha Silent Brass is
Silent Brass is a two-part practice system. The first part is the Pickup Mute, a lightweight mute that sits in the bell and carries a built-in microphone. Unlike a solid mute, it is designed for free, unobstructed blowing, so playing feel and resistance stay as natural as possible.
The second part is the Personal Studio, a small module that processes the microphone signal and sends it to your headphones. Together the two parts noticeably reduce the sound heard outside, while you play at full volume in your headphones.
02Brass Resonance Modeling: why you hear yourself naturally
The core of the system is the Brass Resonance Modeling technology in the Personal Studio. A simple practice mute sounds stuffy and dull because it dampens the sound in the bell. Silent Brass processes the microphone signal digitally so the typical mute character is removed and a natural, open instrument tone is added.
The result: through the headphones you hear yourself as if you were playing with no mute in a room, including a subtle reverb. That is exactly the difference from a classic practice mute, where you only perceive yourself as stuffy and dull.
03How quiet it gets, and who it suits
The sound radiated outward drops strongly, making practice realistic in a rented flat, late in the evening, in a hotel room or next to sleeping housemates. Neighbours and family hear very little, while you play with full dynamics in your headphones.
Silent Brass suits anyone whose practice times fail because of volume: pupils and students with thin walls, working players who practise in the evening, and travellers who do not want to skip daily training in a hotel. It is not a full replacement for playing in a room, but an honest tool to make regular practice possible at all.
04Play-along via the Aux input
The Personal Studio has an Aux input. Through it you can feed in a smartphone, a player or backing tracks and hear that signal together with your own playing in the headphones. This lets you practise to accompaniments, a metronome or play-along recordings without filling the room with sound.
Depending on the module generation, the connectivity varies slightly. Check the product details of the specific system if a particular connection matters to you.
05Which instruments Silent Brass is made for
Silent Brass is built to fit each instrument, since bell shape and tuning differ. We carry the current J series for the main brass instruments. When buying, make sure to pick the model that fits your instrument, as the Pickup Mute is matched to each bell shape.

| Instrument | Model |

| Trumpet | SB7J |
| Trombone | SB5J |
| Horn | SB3J |
| Flugelhorn | SB6J |
06Handling and care
The Pickup Mute is placed in the bell like an ordinary mute; aim for a firm but non-jamming fit so intonation and response stay correct. Treat the mute carefully, as it holds electronics: do not drop it, store it dry and coil the cable without kinks.
After playing, condensation can collect in the bell and on the mute. Wipe the mute dry before storing it. For the different mute types and everyday trumpet care, see our guides on trumpet mute types and on trumpet care.
Yamaha Silent Brass solves the most common practice problem for brass players: too loud for the surroundings. With the Pickup Mute and Brass Resonance Modeling you practise quietly and still hear yourself naturally. Just pick the model that fits your instrument.
