The ukulele string material decides how warm or bright your ukulele sounds, how the strings feel under your fingers and how reliably they hold their tuning. Four materials dominate the market: classic nylon, warm Nylgut, precise fluorocarbon and punchy titanium.
This guide explains the differences so you can choose with intent rather than guess. One thing first, because it applies whatever the material: strings are size-specific. Soprano, concert and tenor share the standard G-C-E-A tuning but each needs its own set; the baritone ukulele is tuned D-G-B-E and uses a separate set, and bass ukuleles have their own strings.
01Nylon: the warm classic
Nylon is the original material of the modern ukulele and remains the affordable entry-level option. The tone is soft and warm, with fewer overtones than the more modern materials. Under the fingers, nylon feels pleasantly smooth.
The trade-off: pure nylon reacts more to temperature and humidity and takes a little longer to settle into reliable tuning after fitting. For beginners who want the classic, round ukulele tone, nylon is still a solid and inexpensive choice.
02Nylgut: the warm quasi-standard
Nylgut, developed by Aquila, is a synthetic gut made from a special polymer blend. It mimics the sound of historic gut strings: warm and traditional, with the round island tone many associate with the ukulele. Compared with pure nylon, Nylgut sounds clearer and projects a little more.
This blend of warm character and good tuning stability has made Nylgut a quasi-standard on many ukuleles; a great many instruments ship with it from the factory. If you want the warm, traditional tone, this is the right pick. Our range includes Nylgut sets for every size, such as the Aquila Ukulelensaiten Satz 7U Konzert for the concert ukulele.

03Fluorocarbon: bright and precise
Fluorocarbon strings are clear, thinner and denser than Nylgut. Originally from the fishing-line world, they deliver a brighter, clearer and more precise tone with strong attack and good sustain. Because the material is denser, the strings run slightly thinner at the same tuning.
A practical benefit: fluorocarbon reacts less to temperature swings than nylon and is very tuning-stable. If you like a modern, defined tone with clear note separation, try fluorocarbon, for example the Martin M600 Fluorcarbon Ukulele Saiten Sopran/Konzert for soprano and concert ukulele.

04Titanium: more projection, smooth feel
D'Addario's Titanium strings are not actually made of titanium, but of a special monofilament with a characteristic tint. Tonally they sit between warm and bright: bright and assertive, with more projection than nylon and a smooth, pleasant feel under the fingers.
Titanium is a good choice when you need volume and clarity without switching fully to the fluorocarbon tone. For the tenor ukulele, the D'Addario EJ87T Titanium Ukulelensaiten Satz, Tenor is a natural fit.

05The materials side by side
There is no best material, only the right one for your desired tone. The table sums up the characters. Find the full overview of all sizes and materials in the Ukulelen - Saiten category.
| Material | Tone | Feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nylon | soft, warm, few overtones | smooth | beginners, classic round tone, small budget |
| Nylgut (Aquila) | warm, traditional, round island tone | soft, traditional | warm traditional tone, quasi-standard |
| Fluorocarbon (Martin, Worth) | bright, clear, precise | thinner, smooth | modern defined tone, high tuning stability |
| Titanium (D'Addario) | bright, assertive, strong projection | smooth | more volume and clarity, pleasant playing feel |
In short: for a warm, traditional sound, choose Nylgut. For brightness and precision, fluorocarbon is your material; for projection with a smooth feel, try titanium. Strings are affordable, so experimenting with your favourite tone is worthwhile. Just make sure you pick the right size for your ukulele. A baritone set is available on request.
