01What a self-playing piano really is

02How recording and playback work

During recording, sensors on the keys, hammers and pedals capture every movement and turn it into data. Not only the notes are recorded, but also the striking force of each individual key and the exact depth to which a pedal is pressed. The dynamics of a performance are preserved this way, the soft and the loud, the accelerating and the holding back.

On playback the process runs in reverse: the stored data drives the solenoids, which move the keys with exactly the recorded force and order.
